The serpentine of the South Shabrov deposit |
Serpentaria (lat.) means "similar to a snake". (Serpentine rocks sometimes resemble snakeskin.)
Opalescent or gelatinous type of serpentine which is rich in water, having wax glitter and homogeneous colour
(light-green, light-yellow, seldom greenish-brown) is called ophite (Gr. snake). Firm and neatly coloured
serpentine is used as commercially used stone for making a variety of products. Stone processing companies of the
Chelyabinsk region manufacture such fine works of art as fireplaces, vases, table tops, jewellery boxes, ashtrays and ritual
accessories.

The serpentine of the Grigorjev deposit |
Serpentine is used for decoration of architectural complexes. The residence of the Governor of the
Sverdlovsk region is decorated with serpentine from the South Shabrov deposit. Beautiful candlesticks, vases,
desk sets, stone clocks attract visitors in the Museum of stone-cutting art and jeweler's shops in Ekaterinburg.
Serpentine being used commercially is extracted from the Shabrov and South Shabrov deposits which are located in
the Chkalov district 20-25 km south off Ekaterinburg.
